چکیده

This paper establishes a general equivalence between discrete choice and rational inattention models. Matejka and McKay (2015, AER) showed that when information costs are modelled using the Shannon entropy function, the resulting choice probabilities in the rational inattention model take the multinomial logit form. By exploiting convex-analytic properties of the discrete choice model, we show that when information costs are modelled using a class of generalized entropy functions, the choice probabilities in any rational inattention model are observationally equivalent to some additive random utility discrete choice model and vice versa. Thus any additive random utility model can be given an interpretation in terms of boundedly rational behavior. This includes empirically relevant specifications such as the probit and nested logit models. JEL codes: D03, C25, D81, E03

Rational Inattention to Discrete Choices: A New Foundation for the Multinomial Logit Model†‡

Individuals must often choose among discrete actions with imperfect information about their payoffs. Before choosing, they have an opportunity to study the payoffs, but doing so is costly. This creates new choices such as the number of and types of questions to ask. We model these situations using the rational inattention approach to information frictions. We find that the decision maker’s opti...

Store Quality Image and the ‘rational Inattention Hypothesis’: an Empirical Study of the Drivers of $9 and 9¢ Price-endings among Internet-based Sellers

Prior research shows that 9¢, 99¢, $9 and $99 in retail prices occur far more than expected. We investigate the extent to which these “‘9’ price-endings” occur in Internet-based selling, and explore what drives the observed variations. In particular, we explore theories based on customer perceptions of store quality image and rational inattention to price-endings. To accomplish this, we specify...

Travel time variability and rational inattention

This paper sets up a rational inattention model for the choice of departure time for a traveler facing random travel time. The traveler chooses how much information to acquire about the travel time outcome before choosing departure time. This reduces the cost of travel time variability compared to models in which the information is exogenously fixed .

Rational Inattention Dynamics: Inertia and Delay in Decision-Making

We solve a general class of dynamic rational-inattention problems in which an agent repeatedly acquires costly information about an evolving state and selects actions. The solution resembles the choice rule in a dynamic logit model, but it is biased towards an optimal default rule that is independent of the realized state. The model provides the same fit to choice data as dynamic logit, but, be...

Business Cycle Dynamics under Rational Inattention∗

This paper studies a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with rational inattention. Decisionmakers have limited attention and choose the optimal allocation of their attention. We study the implications of rational inattention for business cycle dynamics. For example, we study how rational inattention affects impulse responses of prices and quantities to monetary policy shocks, aggregat...
